Forum: netlabels Subject: Netlabel CMS? (Content Management System)

Well - I'm not sure if this question has been asked before - but I'm sure other people must have run into the problems I have in selecting a suitable CMS for running a netlabel. I have looked into the possibility of using Drupal to manage my netlabel, however its features seem a long way off what I *really* want; which is to take the legwork out of updating. I'm wondering if anyone has found a viable solution? The closest I have come so far is using Drupal with various modules, however this (so far as I'm aware) only allows upload of mp3s on a per file basis (no mass import), making it rather cumbersome, it also seems difficult to group files by release (which is what we all want!).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated - I'd love to hear what systems people are currently using themselves (if any?)

_hi i recomend you to use a small and smart script called wikepage, its very simple, templates are easy to customize and you no need to setup a database it works with flat files, also has a blog function and RSS support and wiki format.

_im running (http://techkilla.com) with it and a few flash components developed by myself, but if you use it with standard html templates you will have no complications.

_leave you here the URL

http://wikepage.org/

_hope it works for u, cheers from mexico!

I wrote an article in three parts about "How to start up a netlabel" talking about CMSs as well. The article is at the following url but it's in italian: http://eldino.wordpress.com/2008/04/06/it-come-aprire-una-netlabel-parte-13/

As I wrote in the article, please check the pseudo-netlabel http://www.8bitcollective.com/, they used a CMS called PunBB (that is mostly forum-oriented) but that looks very cool.
Link: http://punbb.org/

Dont use services like Blogger.com coz downloading the oldest releases is a pain compared to a single Releases page. Try to download the first releases of http://filthylittleangels.blogspot.com/ ... you need tons of clicks to reach first posts/releases! That is confusing and noobs-killer.

Well - since I couldn't find any solution I was *really* happy with, I've started developing a Wordpress plugin for all our netlabel needs! I will keep you all updated :)

i use my own CMS -> netaudio.ru

i think it is the better way for web-developing in netlabels area - to build own scripts - it is longer way, but it is right.

I strongly recommend you to use WordPress.

there are several benefits.

you can use the podpress-plugin to stream your mp3s, to deliver a podcast and add a preview function to all your releases.

wordpress comes also around with some other interesting plugins to publish a newsletter...

also there are thousands of useful and exciting designs ready to use.

have a look on http://phlow-magazine.com.

we use wordpress for our magazine and it's really fun to use this cms.

Hi Huw,

I'm using Wordpress >>> www.restingbell.net

But I'm hosting my mp3's-files at archive.org and sonicsquirrel.net, so I don't have to upload the files on my server. That makes the handling in Wordpress easier. I only have to link to the files.

I tried Drupal, but I think Wordpress is lighter (in performance and size) and easier to use.

All the best

Well, you've done a really good job on the site Christian! - I wouldn't have realised it was Wordpress. The design is good, and the content is broken down very well too. I guess it just goes to show what you can do with WP - I've considered using it too. Unfortunately it still leaves the problem of how to handle file upload - my quest continues. I'm considering writing a custom made script to handle uploads alone, and use something like WP for everything else. It's the best solution I can think of at the moment.

Eldino mentioned that he had written an article in three parts on how to start a netlabel called Come aprire una netlabel.

Since I am thinking about starting my own netlabel, I took it upon myself to "translate" his article using Google's Language Tools.

You can read my translation at Envisioning Toad.

Thanks again to Eldino for putting the time into writing his original article.

hi there, wp is maybe the best way to go. but if you're not comfortable with php editing (or your a complete dumb as i am), try blogger. they let you host the blog in your server but operate trough their interface. not the best but can do the job.
